Reasons Why I'm "Boycotting" The World Cup

1. It's the only time of the year that people still want to wave flags. That kind of annoys me because it lets you know where their priorities are.

2. It (sport) is the Opiate Of The Masses, and has long since supplanted religion in that role.

3. It is being held in South Africa, whose government has systematically turned a blind eye, or even encouraged, the murder of white farmers, which to me ought to be classed as genocide, plain and simple.

Pretty obvious stuff really.

Additional reasons why I would not go out there even if I was a football enthusiast:

- SA has what is possibly the highest murder rate in the world (not sure if it is *the* highest but it's up there with Brazil)

- You know as well as I do that English and Dutch fans will be targeted specifically by criminals for racial and political reasons

- Oh, and the first friendly there ended in a stampede because entry was free. That really gives me faith in the hosts of the tournament...

South African News 24

Sasolburg - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday urged South Africans to "be good" for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

“In this time, we need good South Africans. Let them, just for four weeks, be good. Just for four weeks,” he said at a women's prayer meeting at Zamdela Stadium in Sasolburg.
