This isn't the Grampians or the Highlands or the Pennines. This is low land NE England. Conservatively, we have had about 10 inches of snow (as the press predicted) , probably a full foot all tolled. And I should know as I made the mistake of standing in it yesterday and it is surely 10 inches plus. Highly unusual as a weather event. Sometimes you hear about more wild snowfalls to the north a little (Durham is another of those 'cities built on seven hills') that cuts off villages or something, but as I say, not here.
I actually watched the other day as a car was stuck trying to get out of its own street, for about 5 mins as the owner dug his way out with the help of a neighbour. I thought back and I don't recall ever having seen that happen before. Now if you are reading this and you are from Germany or Russia or Canada or somewhere, this will probably bring you much amusement I suppose, but it just doesn't happen here. Some older people here can still hark back to times when they could not leave their houses due to snow, back before 'global warming' (the Sun cycle shifting to a high period of activity). Maybe we're in for a sustained cooler period again thanks to the new low activity phase of the sunspot cycle. Thankfully it seems to have put an end to Al Gore's shenanigans at least.
